GANTRY FEST CANCELLED; MUSIC STILL GOES ON!

RE: GANTRY PARK FALL FEST ON SATURDAY, 10/17

Due to unfortunate weather circumstances the Gantry Plaza State Park Fall Festival has been cancelled, but AM&A has moved the live music to Shillelagh Tavern in Astoria, with an afterparty to boot!

A message from AM&A:

For all those who were eagerly anticipating AM&A’s Harvest Festival at the Gantries this Saturday we have a very important anouncement to make. Due to unfavorable weather conditions we will NOT be able to host our festival outdoors as we originally planned. Instead we will be hosting it at our new favorite venue Shillelagh Tavern on 48th St and 30th Ave (47-22 30th Ave). The festivities begin at 2pm and continue throughout the evening with some of Astoria’s finest in groundbreaking diversity.

2p-Os Clavelitos
3p-Plasma
4p- Stone Robot
5p- The Jamies

We are especially pleased to feature Jamie Stellini and her band The Jamies as a highlighted local artist who has been featured in the Daily News  for working on her weekly song project, writing and recording one song every week for a year.

We will have live art and prints available from some of the area’s most abstract artists, including Ben Louria, Chris Hingle, Chris Riggs, and Erin, as well as BBQ by Trainwreck Washington.

Also check out our afterparty starting @ 8pm featuring The Concentrics and AwShockKiss. Invite on Facebook here.

Stand by your local art & music-makers this weekend – the weather may be bad, but the party can’t be rained out if it’s indoors!

Thanks for all your support, as always.

Please join the AM&A Group on Facebook to receive instant updates & direct invites to all of our events, big or small!

See you out there!

Following a successful Summer, Astoria Music & Arts continues their programming in Fall 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Following a successful Summer, Astoria Music & Arts continues their programming in Fall 2009

QUEENS, NEW YORK, September 24, 2009–Astoria Music & Arts (AM&A) is thrilled to announce the next phase of their 2009 event programming, including a brand new music series called “Sounds of the Scene” at Shillelagh and The Quays in Astoria, a Zombie Stomp Social on Halloween, and a fall festival at beautiful Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City.

Astoria Music & Arts recently launched the “Sounds of the Scene” music performance series at Shillelagh (47-22 30th Ave) and The Quays (45-02 30th Ave) in Astoria. Indie/alternative band Stone Robot and edgy songstress Doris Cellar kicked off the series at Shillelagh, and AM&A will continue to host Sounds of the Scene on Friday and Saturday nights at these standout venues. The Quays has been a particularly important staple in the growth of the local scene, with bartender Gerald Donnelly playing in legendary Queens band Lancaster County Prison, Little Creatures’ Jimmy Artache running the open mic on Thursdays, and Shane McGowan of The Pogues popping in for some drinks whenever he’s in New York City. In addition, The Quays is home to another AM&A series, the Monday night music showcase “Manic Mondays at The Quays.” Shillelagh is also aiming to become a haven for local music in Astoria: the venue offers drink specials on show nights and is ready to rock with a brand new sound system.

Both venues are easily accessible and located on the very same avenue in Astoria, and will also be presenting a wild holiday weekend for local ghosts and ghouls! There will be two shows: one on October 30th at The Quays, and a second at Shillelagh, which will be hosting the return of the Zombie Stomp Social on Halloween night, October 31st, complete with a costume contest!

But even before the Halloween shows, AM&A is bringing a special celebration to Long Island City. Astoria Music & Arts has been invited by LIC’s Gantry Plaza State Park to help them celebrate the fall season with a music and arts festival on Saturday, October 17th, 2009. AM&A and Gantry Plaza State Park will present a day of music, arts, and activities featuring music by several of Astoria’s own. Gantry Plaza State Park is not only a beautiful location with unparalleled views of the Manhattan skyline from the LIC shore, but it has also become a burgeoning spot for emerging musicians and artists to perform, as evidenced by the past two years of free Summer music on Tuesday evenings as part of Live at the Gantries, presented by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation; Queens Council on the Arts; and Queens Theatre in the Park.

ABOUT ASTORIA MUSIC & ARTS:
Astoria Music & Arts (AM&A) is committed to preserving the continually thriving music and arts community surrounding the Astoria/Long Island City area. Their mission is to build a bridge between local music, performing, and visual artists, and the locations in which they can showcase their talent. AM&A has been featured in LIC’s Ins&Outs Magazine as well as the magazine’s local music mini-documentary, “Live Local, Rock Local” (found in the archives of www.insandoutstv.com). Most recently, their Second Annual “Astoria Music Now!” festival garnered significant local media attention, including a special feature article in the New York Daily News. AM&A presents new series: Manic Mondays at The Quays

AM&A PRESENTS A NEW MONDAY NIGHT SERIES IN ASTORIA:

MANIC MONDAYS!

STARTING TONIGHT!
MONDAY, AUGUST 3RD
8PM-11PM, at
THE QUAYS PUB
(4502 30TH AVE)

In the wake of the largest music fest our neighborhood has ever seen we are continuing the tradition of eclectically diverse and introspective programming. Justin Finley and Jimmy Artache (host of thursdays open mic) will be showcasing performers that are groundbreaking in style and form from our neighborhood.

The Quays Pub has been a mainstay on the thriving cultural landscape since it’s inception in 2005. In addition to being a very close friends to Shane McGowen (of the legendary folk / punk band the Pogues) Barry O’ Reilley (owner of the Quays) is somewhat of a local celeb in that he has nurtured the scene by providing a venue for some of the areas finest emerging artists. AM&A has been offered a new home for our Monday night music showcase in one of our favorite local watering holes in the heart of Astoria.

What better way to re-debut our showcase series then to feature the very talented:

Gerald Donnelly- Donnelly is a fixture at the Quays he is well known for his quick wit and his legendary Queens band Lancaster County Prison. You can find him behind the bar twice a week where he’ll regail you with stories and serve up cold ones all night long. When he performs his style incorporates everything from doo woop to hip hop, You wanted the greatest you got it!!!

Trainwreck Washington- A native Jayhawker, the one man band known as Trainwreck Washington, has rambled and gambled his way through Texas to New York City. Putting his banjo to the test playing a blend of scrappy southern and city blues, keeping it down home and downtown.

Tibetan Punks- Born and Bred in Astoria Queens we are the Bastard children of Rock and Roll. We wander the streets downing 40 oz’s and screaming our rhymes and lines. We likes our women who can strut their legs and drinks they lickors.
